Your Guide to Grit-o’Cobs® Product Changes

Posted on May 10, 2022

Changes are coming to our line of Grit-o'Cobs products, including product availability, naming conventions and packaging.

While we know these types of changes can sometimes be confusing, we've assembled a guide to help walk through the adjustments.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?

This new approach reduces the number of Grit-o'Cobs products in our lineup, creating a simplified, streamlined offering designed to better ensure in-stock status, improved quality, and better service for our customers.

WHAT IS THE SHORT-TERM IMPACT?

The first products impacted are Grit-o'Cobs 814, Grit-o’Cobs 1014 and Grit-o'Cobs 1020, which are being replaced with a new product called Grit-o'Cobs MG135 (Mid-Grade Grit, SGN 135). This is the first time terms like "Mid-Grade" and "SGN" are appearing in our product lineup.

UPDATED, INTUITIVE TERMINOLOGY

Moving forward, Grit-o'Cobs product names will include helpful references to the grade, the source, and the size of the product.

To help explain, let's breakdown Grit-o'Cobs MG135, the first of our products to undergo the update.

GRADE
Provides a high-level indication of product size. Expressed as coarse (C), mid-grade (M), or fine (F). In Grit-o'Cobs MG135, the "M" is used to quickly convey that this is a mid-grade product.

SOURCE
Indicates whether the product is derived from the corn cob's gritty, woody ring (G) or the lighter-weight pith/chaff (PC) section of the corn cob. In Grit-o'Cobs MG135, the "G" is used to convey that this a grit-based product.

SIZE
The last part of the product name indicates the size of the particles, expressed in the form of a size guide number. In Grit-o'Cobs MG135, the "135" conveys that the particles have a size guide number of 135.

SIZE GUIDE NUMBER (SGN) SIZING

The Size Guide Number (or SGN) is the average particle diameter of the product, expressed in millimeters (mm) then multiplied by 100. A 35 SGN product has particles sized at .35mm.

A 200 SGN product has particles sized at 2mm.

HOW WILL SGN SIZING BE USED?
Moving forward, you'll begin to notice our product names transitioning to include SGN sizes (i.e. 35, 140, 255).

UNIFORMITY INDEX (UI)
Uniformity Index (or UI) is used to determine the consistency of the granular diameter (SGN) within a given bag of product. You'll soon begin to see this number included on our product information, including spec sheets.

The higher the UI, the greater the number of particles close in size to the listed SGN. A product with a UI of 100 means that all of the granules have the exact same size. A UI of 50 means that the average small particle is half the size of the average large particle.

WHAT IS THE LONG-TERM IMPACT?

Over the course of the next few months, we will be transitioning the entire product line over to the new naming convention.

In some cases, there are one-to-one conversions, where nothing changes with the product other than the name. This is the case for Grit-o'Cobs 814, which will be known as Grit-o'Cobs CG355 moving forward.

In other cases, however, we'll be condensing multiple existing products into one product with the new naming convention. This is the case for Grit-o'Cobs 814, Grit-o’Cobs 1014 and Grit-o'Cobs 1020, for example, which are being replaced with Grit-o'Cobs MG135.

Price sheets, specification sheets, packaging, and additional product information will also be impacted on a rolling basis.
