Organics: April Organics Update

Posted by Sierra Dice, Organic Agronomy Consultant on April 04, 2022

Fertilizer markets have been volatile the past year but have become even more so in the last few months. Pandemic related supply-chain issues have caused higher prices and tighter supply for the past year, but now with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, these things are intensifying.

Organic fertilizer has not been an exception to these issues, and now faces its own unique hurdle; avian influenza. A highly pathogenic form of avian influenza is popping up across commercial and backyard flocks in several states. Because of this, the litter from the infected flocks must be disposed of and cannot be sold as fertilizer. With one of the most common organic fertilizers being removed from the marketplace, growers are seeking other options to fill this nutritional void.

The Andersons has a broad portfolio of organic nutrients to help support your operation. Most of our fertilizer products are sourced domestically and are OMRI Listed® options to help make your 2022 crop season successful. When it comes to dry fertilizers, we offer Chilean nitrate, muriate of potash (MOP), The Andersons SmartPhos® DG Natural phosphate, and sulfate of potash (SOP). We have also released an OMRI Listed liquid starter fertilizer, PureStart™, featuring a 2-9-3 analysis. PureStart makes a great addition to fertilizer programs to push yield while maximizing return on investment. This product can be applied in-furrow or 2x2 at planting. Our organic line-up also contains OMRI Listed gypsum, lime, and carbon-based soil amendment products to increase soil health and microbe activity.

Feel free to contact your Trusted Ag Advisor from The Andersons or myself to discuss fertilizer plans, product availability and prices.
