Everything you need to know about granular micronutrients

Posted on March 20, 2023

Granular micronutrients are small, solid particles containing essential micronutrients for plant growth, such as iron, manganese, copper, zinc, boron, molybdenum, or even humic acid.

Although small, micronutrients can make a significant impact on overall plant and soil health. They are used in agriculture applications to ensure crops have the nutrients they need for optimal growth and maximizing crop yields at harvest.

Dry Dispersing Granules

Granular micronutrients are dry-applied and can be used as a dry starter, dry broadcast, strip-till, or side-dress application.

Upon contact with water, each granule disperses into thousands of microparticles that move through the soil system and into the root zone of the crop.

This level of dispersibility delivers precise nutrient delivery while massively increasing the surface area of the micronutrients. The increase in surface area and dispersion of microparticles in the soil significantly improves micronutrient availability for the crop.

Optimize Plant and Soil Health

Granular micronutrients work as an essential tool for optimizing plant and soil health. They work with crops to help encourage better, healthier crops in several ways:

     1. They encourage plant growth by providing essential nutrients critical to plant growth right when plants need it most, whether granular micronutrients are applied at planting or in a side dress later in the growing season.
     2. These micronutrients help improve soil fertility by correcting nutrient deficiencies that may be present in the soil in an effortless way early in the growing season.
     3. Some micronutrients can increase a crop’s nutrient uptake ability. For example, boron assists with the uptake of calcium, which improves the plant’s absorption ability.

Increase Yield and Return on Investment

With the ability to optimize plant growth, improve crop quality, and increase yields, applying granular micronutrients can lead to higher profits and a better return on investment for growers. The Andersons MicroMark DG Humic has proven its usefulness in initial trials.

This granular micronutrient is produced with dispersing granule technology and a unique blend of calcium, sulfur, manganese, and zinc. MicroMark DG Humic includes humic acid, which is a natural chelator of micronutrients and has been shown to improve soil health.

An initial third-party trial of MicroMark DG Humic offered the highest yield gains amongst six of the top dry granular competitors.

At an application rate of 10#/A, it offered yield gains of +17.4 Bu/A. with positive net returns of +$93.40/A.
